Great for camping or cook outs!
At first, I was not sure what the Lodge 12 Cast Iron Kickoff Grill was exactly. Now that I have one, I am glad that I do. My husband and I have recently begun to camp more often and this item comes in very handy and is much more compact that a traditional small charcoal grill. The grill is two pieces. The bottom is the base with short legs. It has a lip around the edge so that you can add the charcoal. Light the charcoal and layer the base. Then add the top cover which is the grilling area. It has grates which are great for juices to flow and also so that you get those great grill marks on the food you are cooking. The grill also comes with handles so that you can move the top part on and off as needed when it is hot. I have found that this is much nicer to use then the offered grills at a camp ground. The quality is great. The product is real cast iron that has already been seasoned and is pretty heavy. The grill is fairly easy to clean once it cools off. Overall this is a great item to have for camping if you like the charcoal taste. It does not take up too much space and it does not take much to clean up. I really love this grill as I have found that I am very happy with most products that I own made by Lodge.

Extremely heavy and well build, but it is made of pure cast iron. Cooks evenly and fast. I will be using this more than I use the large grill. Great grill for small cook outs, or for a single person. Because it's cast iron you need to be very careful as it gets extremely hot. Only problem I have with it is, that there is no top to cover (I made a cover to put on top), but other than that it's great. I certainly will be using this one on a regular basic.

    This is a small, yet very sturdy grill that's perfect for foods that cook quickly. The heavy cast iron holds plenty of heat to sear particularly well. That means it's great for burgers, hot dogs, and such. It's better than my propane grill for high-heat finishing, in fact. There's no lid, so you're limited to grilling (no roasting, etc), but it does that job well. The heavy cast iron grilling surface is really good for searing, much better than those thin steel racks in other small grills. It's semi-portable, though the whole thing gets hot, so you've got to give it plenty of time to cool before packing it up. It'll be great for camping, and a good tailgate grill if you have somewhere to leave it during the game (a pickup bed, for example).

    Perfect For Tailgating or Camping
    This cool little portable grill is versatile, and can be used a couple different ways. It looks like a Dutch oven with a slotted bottom, so you can put the coals on the flat surface, put the pot over it with the grill side up, and Bob's your uncle! Or you can put the charcoal in the pot (on the cement or other nonflammable surface) put the flat part on top, and use it like a griddle. It has detachable handles for convenience, and the grill is well made and sturdy. I can see this getting used a lot during tailgating season, or on camping trips.

    Wow! Fantastic grill
    This was my 1st time using a cast iron grill, and the food was excellent. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. I received the grill a few days before Memorial day and it was perfect timing. I filled the chimney starter 1/2 full with charcoal, let them heat up put them in the base and was ready to grill. You can use the handles to adjust the air flow which maximizes for even heating. We prepared steaks, corn and chicken and various other items. I sprayed the grill with crisco grill spray, next time I will use olive oil. All items cooked in less time than usual and everything tasted good. After I washed with soapy water and packed my grill away until next time. I am excited about this little grill, looking forward to using it much this summer.

    Great for camping
    We are such camping novices so we're learning more as we go out. Wanted a nice small grill that we can use when we're out in our tent. Not all campgrounds have grills or ones that I want to use. So, by having our own, I know that I'll be cooking some great meals. This grill is nice and heavy. Set it up, add some charcoal, put on the dome lid, and let it heat up. Because this is cast iron, I did take the time to season it before I used it for the first time. I'm able to cook 2 steaks on it with no problem. When everything is cooled down, I just washed it up, added a light coat of oil, and then packed it in a special box my husband made for it. So easy to store. Easy to set up. And easy to clean. Love the convenience of having this smaller grill. We don't go camping a lot but, I like knowing I'll be making our food on our nice clean grill.

    You get amazing flavor with this grill
    You get amazing flavor with this Grill. It is very heavy duty and you don't have to worry about it turning over or blowing away. It is not huge to have a big cookout with but it's good for a little camping trip or just a couple of people at home to grill a couple of steaks. We grilled three rib eye steaks for a belated Mother's Day / Memorial Day Cookout. Our steaks were absolutely delicious and it didn't take them too long to cook. The only downfalls I would say isvthat it's sits too low to the ground and the other thing is that it is so heavy. But other than those things it is an amazing Grill.

    Best grilled burgers ever! OmGosh!!
    This grill is super heavy and super good. I will use this thing forever. The burgers I grilled on them are the best burgers I have ever cooked, eaten and raved about them. The ONLY con is that the grill is heavy. Everything else about this grill is spot on. I sat it on top of a garbage can outside close to our big bbq pit. It held 4 huge burgers and cooked them to perfection. I cleaned the grill with soap and water, dried it immediately and sprayed cooking spray on it. I then lit the charcoal and let them burn until they turned grey @ 10 minutes. I spread out the coals, put the dome grill on it and let it heat up good. Then, I added the burgers. After cooking I put the coals in a bucket of water to cool them and then let the grill cool. After it cooled I cleaned it with soap and water and put oil on it to keep it good. This grill cooks to perfection. It can be used for camping, home and on vacation. I'd recommend this in a heartbeat.

    Awesome quality and American Made!
    The Lodge Cast Iron Kickoff Grill and Square Griddle are great solid products. The grill was perfect for our Memorial Day cookout with friends after a day out kayaking and fishing. These are solid cast iron, heavy and very durable. The grill is simple to use. It comes with the handles that go on very easily and make for cleanup and disposing the used charcoal easy. It really has good weight to it and is real American cast iron. The griddle is also solid and has really good weight to it. Another great American made cast iron product. It's perfect for a quick couple of eggs or a pancake without having to break out the big electric griddle. It's the perfect size to be used with the kickoff grill and cleans up easily. You'll know the quality of both of these as soon as you feel the weight of them. Genuine American made cast iron! Small enough to throw in the back of the suv to knock out a couple of burgers and dogs after a day on the water fishing and more than durable enough to last for many years. I've attached a couple of pictures so you can see what they actually look like and the size of the griddle in comparison to the grill. I would absolutely recommend both of these to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and just need a good simple cast iron grill and griddle.

    First let me say I love this only slightly less than I love my children. I have grilled every day since I got it. But you must know this: it is very heavy, it is cast iron after all, so if you have problems lifting and no one to help you you may want to try something else. For me it is wonderful. It has a large enough surface to grill possibly 7 good sized burgers and endless hotdogs too. It could easily hold 3 very large steaks. I use and highly recommend a charcoal starter tower. That way you won't need lighter fluid and the briquettes are ready to dump on the grill in about 20-30 minutes. The grill cooks beautifully and the flavor of the food is lovely. I have grilled everything from pineapple to whole potatoes with everything cooked to perfection. But if you think this review is being written by an expert grill master you would be wrong. I was the person squirting half a can of lighter fluid on a kettle grill and adding more and more charcoal in a poor attempt to keep a fire going long enough to cook something but not with this lodge grill. It takes very little charcoal to cook and it burns for a long time. I thought it would be very hard to clean but it is not. Yes, it takes a bit of work but all grills do. I would recommend this to everyone especially those of you who are grill challenged like me. You won't be sorry.
